A Simple Solution For Starting Fires!  Lost your matches? You can start a fire using a flashlight, steel wool, cotton ball and snare wire.

TOOLS & MATERIALS:

fire starting

  • Mag-lite flash light (uses 2 AA batteries)
  • 0000 steel wool
  • 100% cotton or toilet paper
  • Snare wire

STEP 1.  Build a small tinder pile in a safe location on the ground.

STEP 2.  Remove the top and bulb from the Mag-lite flash light. Cut two small pieces of snare wire about 1/2" long. Insert the snare wire into the two holes for the light bulb's connection. Spread the snare wire out like a "V" so they don't touch!

STEP 3.  Take a small piece of steel wool and place a small amount of the 100% cotton (or toilet paper) on top. Gently dab the steel wool onto the two pieces of snare wire until the steel wool ignites into a red glowing ember.

STEP 4.  Once the steel wool ignites, quickly place it into your tinder pile. Gently blow on the flame until the 100% cotton ignites, which will then ignite your tinder. Slowly add larger pieces of wood, allowing the fire to grow.
